Cache Lake Country: Life in the North Woods
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (April, 1990)
Authors: Henry B. Kane, John J. Rowlands, and Verlyn Klinkenborg
Average review score:

Best Outdoor Book Ever!
I first read this book in 1972, the original 1947 edition. It is one of the few permanent items in my library. I read it again at least once a year. I have even tried some of the projects John describes including the radio set made out of bits laying around the cabin. If you want a relaxing and enjoyable read about life in the woods, get this!

Pure Lore of the North
Every true outdoors man and woman needs to read two books. One is Leopold's A Sand County Alamanac, the other is Cache Lake Country. If you've hunted, fished, and trekked the northwoods as much as I have, and love its brooding, dark beauty, this book will capture the sensations of the taiga. It is almost painful to read it if you find yourself trapped in someone else's idea of the good life, when what you really want to do is chuck it all for a cabin in the boreal forest.

CACHE LAKE COUNTRY -- LIVING YOUR DREAM
I first read this book when I was 12 years old, I am now 46. I could not put it down and can not. I made my first knike sheath, first snow shoes, and my first moc;s (which remain my favorite type of moc's) from sketches from this book, as well as many of the other projects and they all lived up to expectations of a young teenager to present. You feel like you are there with the three men of the story. It is is one of the few books that I reread every couple of years. Worth every penney and then some.

Living in Both Worlds : Piercing the Veil
Published in Paperback by Paewood Enterprises, Inc. (15 May, 2000)
Author: Toni Lynn Wood
Average review score:

Piercing the Veil
I found this book to be one of the most enlightening and informative books available today. So many of the questions I had regarding just what Toni does working with her eight spirit guides, what happens to us when we transition, what these life-times are all about, and much more where answered for me. Since reading this book I feel much closer to God knowing the "Truth" as Toni has given it to us. Piercing the Veil, as well as the entire series, is truly a 'must read' and needs to be in your home library as a daily reference for your peace of mind.

Healing Reading
Toni Lynn Wood truly out does herself with this incredible collaboration with her Spirit Family. Toni Lynn's writing style is so easy to understand and absorb. Although in the previous Living in Both Worlds books, Toni's spirit family is introduced to the readers - Piercing the Veil provides a more personal introduction and welcoming to Toni's family. I found Piercing the Veil to be an incredible educating experience about spirit guides, mediums and piercing the veil between the earth plane and our loved ones in the spirit world. I take comfort in knowing that my loved ones are so near me and that when we die there is still so much more to come.

Extraordinary!
Living in both worlds, Piercing the veil kept me captivated. I have read fewbooks that gave me the feeling this one did. It resonates an energy that sends healing and transformation as you read. It has definately changed my life. I cant wait to read the other two books about this spiritual healer, Toni Lynn Wood. By the way, the message from God, all I can say is "wow". This book is a must read for anyone who is searching for a better understanding of life.

Changing Rooms
Published in Hardcover by Bbc Pubns (April, 1900)
Authors: Linda Barker and Shona Wood
Average review score:

Changing Rooms: The Best Home Improvement Show and Books
I absolutetly adore the show "Changing Rooms" (and "Ground Force" as well), it's so much better than "trading Spaces", the American remake because they are a lot more daring and know how to bring their creativeness to the rooms (plus it does'nt drag on for an entire hour, only thirty minutes). If you have BBC America, watch Changing Rooms, and if you want to revive a dead look in your house buy this book! ...

HOORAY FOR THE NON-BLAND ENGLISH DESIGNERS!
I got hooked on Changing Rooms from the beginning when Direct TV first put BBCA on our system.

I believe this British (the original) show is so much better than the American version of the show, Trading Spaces. I believe it is because the designers are so much daring in their creations and are not as bland (and I really mean bland) as the American counterpart.

But being an American, I don't know if I could do a complete make over from Changing Rooms, but the ideas that Linda Barker gives are so inspirational so hopefully it will me to break out of my own "bland" mold. I could maybe let Laurence redo a room and not cry when I see it.

Handy Andy, where are you, my house needs fixing?

Simply the Best!!
This book will inspire you beyond belief into transforming dull rooms into beautiful ones! This book is fantastic -- it goes through various rooms the Changing Rooms TV show has made over during the past few years, giving you step-by-step info for how to do what they've done. Best of all, the designers on Changing Rooms are just so darn creative and innovative...and what I like is that the makeovers are completely do-able, even for novices. It's worth it for the inspiration alone!

The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia: A Comprehensive Resource for Healthy Eating
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (July, 1999)
Authors: Rebecca Wood, Rebecca Wood, and Paul Pitchford
Average review score:

Invaluable in my kitchen
I have numerous cookbooks and reference books, but this is by far the most valuable book in my kitchen. I refer to it almost daily, and can't recommend it highly enough. It's packed with useful information.

I don't know what this is!!!!
So I look it up here. That's all. Sometimes in my travels ie ChinaTown. I find some very weird ingredients on the packages w/the few english words that is supposed to suffice us written for Americans. I'm grateful for this book, I found out some really good nutritional information on obscure seaweed that I had no clue was being used in pasta making in China. Image that, exactly what I needed for my thyroid gland. But best of all is the TCM and Ayurvedic info on these herbs & roots. Now I buy lotus root by the lb. But the best is correlating the info & giving my cooking a punch I never thought possible nor that I was capable of. I know that if it's something you put in your mouth, this book has got the goods on it. A must have in any kitchen witch's bookshelf.

This book saved my life!
Well, Ok not quite but almost! A few months ago my teenage daugher and I were diagnosed with numerous food allergies and told to follow a rotation diet. A life long vegetarian, it was an almost overwhelming to be told I could no longer eat soy, eggs, pinto beans, kidney beans, avocados, etc. And my daughter is not allowed any legumes as well (nor sugar either).
Clearly the protein was going to be a challenge (we really dislike flesh foods of any kind) but then I read the guidelines for the rotation diet itself and quickly discovered the extreme limits of my food knowledge! Sure I had heard of (but never cooked) quinoa and flax but amaranth and yautia? Not. And even if I could find where to purchase these items, how would I prepare them?
Both our weight and our attitude dropped signficantly in the first few weeks. Then we "modified" the guidelines and found ourselves physically sick again. Luckily for us, my husband purchased this book on a trip to Dallas. While I was skeptical about it's holding my interest as an actual "read through", I found it quite engrossing from almost the first page.
Not only do I now know what to do with the foods on a rotation diet list (knowing that yautia is similar to potatoes means I can now make a favorite soup that otherwise I would have passed over) but because the index is brilliantly organized I can easily look up say "warming foods" and adjust my internal thermostat rather than the whole house which made my husband doubly glad he had bought it! The same for high BP, colds, cancer, you name it.
And I can relax about the protein issue as well knowing which foods on "our list" are highest in protein instead of just choosing those foods with which I might have previously been most familiar. I bought a copy for my mom for her birthday and she can't put it down either!
If you are really interested in preparing a variety of healthy foods no matter what your current state of health might be, do yourself a favor and buy this book. It might not save your life but it will certainly liven up your meals no matter what kind of diet you follow!

A Field Guide to Warblers of North America
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (24 September, 1997)
Authors: Jon Dunn, Cynthia House, Kimball Garrett, and Thomas R. Schultz
Average review score:

Excellent supplemental reference
This book provides good color plates of the warblers in various stages of plummage. The distribution maps are easy to read and color coded. I bought the book because of the multiple pages of natural history information on each species. The birding guide I use in the field has excellent illustrations but total lacks in the supplemental information. So, when I get home, I grab this book to learn the biology of the species.

Second to None!
Several years ago, while watching the bird feeders at Muskatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour, Indiana, I heard a voice behind me pointing out that there were two races of White-crowned Sparrow at the feeder. He went into detail about the subtle differences between the two. At first I thought to myself, who is this guy? Later, I realized that it was Jon Dunn! I have had a high respect for him ever since.
Years later, he was the guest speaker at our bird club meeting. He presented some of the plates from his, at the time, upcoming new field guide to warblers. I fell in love with the plates from the very start. Thomas R. Shultz and Cindy House did a remarkable job, and the detail that was carefully gathered from museum specimens is second to none. I knew from the beginning that I had to have this new field guide and I couldn't wait until it appeared on the shelves.
When I bought my copy of the finished product, it was even more than I expected. Aside from the detailed plates making fall and female warbler identification easier, the text is filled with information on virtually every aspect of life history of each species, with cross-references that will aid any serious researcher. More than just a field guide for identification purposes, this book belongs on the shelf of beginners and experts alike who share a passion for warblers.

Very Cool
This book is essential to anyone who enjoys warblers. Just take one look at the various plumages of the black-throated green warbler and you'll see why this guide is so awesome.

Kiss Psycho Circus, Book 3: Whispered Scream
Published in Paperback by Todd McFarlane Productions (01 April, 2000)
Authors: Brian Holguin, Kevin Conrad, and Ashley Wood
Average review score:

Reprints of KPC #1-3 Nice to have
Its nice to have these graphic novels so as not to ruin the orig1nal comicbook versions. Of course these are nice collectibles too! for those insatiable KISS fans!

Perfect beginning to the saga...
This book contains issues 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Kiss Psycho Circus comic book. Three stories are told: 'The Witching of Adam Moon', 'Nature of the Beast', and 'Smoke & Mirrors'. All of the stories are very compelling to read, especially if you are into dark fantasy or horror. Issue # 3 is my favorite in this book. (Although the entrance of the character Kismet in issues # 4-6 is a welcome addition, not to mention Madame Raven's backstory.)

You do not need to be a fan of the band in order to fully enjoy this book, but fans of the band will enjoy all of the hidden Kiss references. Brian Holguin is one of the best comic book writers in the business and he works very well with Angel Medina/Kevin Conrad. Their visual storytelling style is excellent. Go visit the circus, you won't regret it.

Four creepy 'one shot' tales.
This book includes issues # 7, 8, 9 and 18 of the awesome comic book Kiss Psycho Circus. Each issue is a one shot story that can be read by anyone- fan of the band or not. (Issue # 9 contains the great origin story!)

Brian Holguin really knows how to write compelling tales, and Angel Medina and Kevin Conrad work really well together as far as the art goes. The art in the last issue is by Clayton Crain, the current penciller. Great art + Great Stories = Must have book!

Summer Camp Hit
I ran a summer family camp in July 2002 and built the smaller oven in one day. I had kids from age two to fifty two stomping the clay, sand, hay and water with thier feet. I set fire in the oven on day two and made our first loaf of bread. The directions are easy to follow and was a hit with my fourty campers. I would highly recommend this book. A great family or group activity! Loved it.

Great resource
Great little book. I'm building my oven right now. Well written with easy to understand instructions.

Build Your Own Earth Oven
Brilliant, ..... well worth the investment. Easy to read and understand. Great ideas for designs. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to build an outdoor earth oven.

The Dreaming: A Novel of Australia
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Avon (August, 1992)
Author: Barbara Wood
Average review score:

Something is missing
Of course Barbara Wood is an excellent writer, at least for me, but in this book something was missing at the end of it, all the book was perfect, it keeps you reading, but when you finish, is just like that, you finished the book and you don't know what happened with the other people of the book, what happened with Judd? or Sarah? or Adam? or the last expedition to find her?
As in all of her books, with this one you will learn about Australia.

A good, strong romantic epic
This is a good, solid historical romance. I read another review that commented on this also being an anthropological novel, and I think that is also certainly true. The reader does become immersed in the myths, dream life, and very sad developments of the life of aborigines.

The characters are interesting and strong, and one of the real strengths of this for me was that the characters grow and develop and learn from their experiences. There are no present day villains here--just humans who learna s they go along, and I thought that was particularly nice.

There is a strong sense of the landscape and history of Australia here. Barbara Wood's plot also holds together well and comes to a strong resolution.

Generally, this was a very satisfying book. I am reminded of novels by M. M. Kaye, another novelist who blends history and fiction in marvelous ways.

Hooked on this author!!!
Adding to everyone else's comments all I can say is that I could not put this book down. I know I am going to read this book again in the future. I recently purchased the paperback at my local second hand bookstore without any recommendations. However, now I am going to recommend this author to everyone I know.

Olympic Mountains Trail Guide: National Park & National Forest
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (June, 2003)
Author: Robert L. Wood
Average review score:

Great Book
Robert L. Wood is the recognized expert on the trails of the Olympic Mountains. I don't think a backpacker will find a better guide, but the real beauty of this book is Wood's descriptions of the trails, which can put even armchair hikers in the middle of the mountains.
I guess the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the maps are terrible and you've got to buy a separate guide if you want to hike the beautiful, wild beaches of the Olympic Peninsula.
A very minor quibble, considering the fine, lyric writing, is the way the trails are organized. For example, many of the named trails don't begin at trailheads, but rather from junctions at other trails. Thus if you want to plan a short hike, you must make certain the named trail does not begin 15 miles up the path of another trail.

One of my favorites
Recentley, one of my older customers at my work gave me some old topo maps of the Olympic Pennisula-with Wood's book I was able to match up trails on the maps with waytrails in his book(trails that are no longer on the new topos). The history he writes about is fun to read and he is through with his descriptions of the NF trails, which many books ignore. I also love how he gives elevation at every trail junction, not just at the start & end. A definte must have book if you would like to hike in the Olympics.

The Very Best Guide to the Olympic Mountains
I have done about 80 hikes or climbs in the Olympics in the past two years. I think every description I have used in this book has been accurate. It includes some handy small scale maps as well. The Olympics is one of the best places to hike, winter or summer, and Woods is certainly the expert on the hikes and the history. A must for anyone who is even considering a hike of any length in the Olympics. Like one other reviewer implied, this book is way beyond the simple hike books that simply describe the popular hikes.
Add this book to "Climber's Guide to the Olympic Mountains" by the Olympic Mountain Rescue and you will have everything you need to explore the Olympic Mountains on foot.

Scout's Honor: A Father's Unlikely Foray into the Woods
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (01 May, 2003)
Author: Peter Applebome
Average review score:

The Scouting past and future
The book is funny and well-written, but I was disappointed with the ending. The author suggests how to improve the BSA by lowering its standards to be like other youth groups; allowing homosexuals as youth and adult members and no uniforms are two suggestions. These two issues will hit the hot buttons of those for and against Scouting. Make your own choice. The best parts of the book concern his and his son's experiences in the 'church in the woods' and the outdoor experience. Skip the issues' chapters and you will enjoy the book more.

I laughed, I cried, I fell off the sofa. When's the movie?
This adventure story is non-fiction, but it reads like a comic novel. Only Dave Barry made me laugh as loud - and he doesn't write as well as Applebome does. There are serious topics here: growing up, friendship, doing the right thing, responsibility. They are examined through a cast of characters so zany you wonder how they all ended up in Troop 1.

A wonderful adventure
I often hesitate about writing these reviews, mainly because I'm horrible at writing period. However, for this book I am willing to make an acceptation. This book not only discussed the controversies that surround one of the countries most famous youth organizations, but also took you into the role of a parent in a Boy Scout troop. With believable characters, and unbiased points of view this book is by far the best work of non-fiction I have ever read.
